What is Email Routing?
Email routing refers to how incoming email messages are directed and handled for a domain.
In your hosting service, email routing determines which server is responsible for receiving and processing your domain’s email – whether it’s the local cPanel server or a remote mail server like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
Choosing the correct routing option ensures that emails are delivered reliably and avoid issues such as bounced messages or delivery failures.
Which email routing setting to choose?
- Local Mail Exchanger
- Use this when your email is hosted locally, within the same cPanel
- The server will always accept mail for this domain. The system will deliver mail to the local mailbox.
- Remote Mail Exchanger
- Use this when your email is hosted externally, such as Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
- The server will not accept mail for this domain. The system sends all mail for this domain to the lowest-numbered mail exchanger (MX record).
